EXAM

1. To convey the mood of this image, the brightness was turned down. The mood is sad. The story being told in my eyes, is that this little girl is not happy with her life. She is living in an apartment that does not look very sanitary. She is looking down with a depressed face, almost wanting to get out. The emotion of sympathy is evoked. I feel very sorry for this girl. This image was taken with a normal grayscale. The brightness was then lowered. The picture is very powerful. You almost need to look hard at it to see the whole entire thing. I think the artist did this on purpose, because it gives the picture feeling. The darkness brings out how dirty this household is, and you can really feel it. I think this is subjective to the viewer because many people living in poor households can connect to how she is feeling.

2. This image was shot in high depth of field. I think the artist did this to show how big this segment of land they are living on is. The story being told is that this is an older style family, and they are possibly living on a farm or a plantation. It reminds me of pilgrims. The emotion evoked in me is pride. I almost feel proud of these people for being able to live without all of the technology, and harvesting their own food. I think the contrast in the photo also was brought up a little, and it shows the woman's hands better. They are caked with dirt, which shows how hard they are working. The woman also has a serious face because if she is working that hard, life is not easy.

3. Artist: Doug Richard
This image was also shot in high depth of field. The reason for this is to show how long the street is. The story being told for me is that these kids live on this block, and they walk everywhere, including all the way down this street. The mood of the image is somewhat happy. Its bright and sunny out, with a clear sky, and its shot in color. If this was in black and white however, it would change the mood to grim or creepy. The emotion evoked inside me is happy. It reminds me of being in the city, and summer, even though these people are possibly living in the projects. The artist did a great job of positioning the end of the street in the center of the photo. It really draws your eye there, and it gives you a sense of how long the street is. Also, the street lights are all lined up to enhance that sense. It also makes you wonder what is behind you in the picture, or wondering if the street continues in the other direction as well. Not much was done technically except for positioning of the camera. I think it is subjective to the viewer because many people can relate to living in this type of neighborhood or living in a small city like this.

4. Artist: Herbert Ritts
I think this picture was shot very well. The lady is not focusing on the camera. She is almost blushing. I think that the story is that she is either happy or in love, and she feels young again. Her face looks like a kids facial expression, even though she is older. Thats the beauty of this picture, the contrast in that. I think that the picture contains just her face because that is the most important part, and thats where she is expressing her emotion. The photo was shot in black and white to show age. The emotion evoked in me is ecstatic, and i think this photo is actually a bit peculiar. She is a different form of happy, and she is giving a cute little kid type smile. The angle of it is right up on her face, and it seems like someone might have asked her a question. That could be the reason for blushing and looking away. I think this is subjective to the viewer because people of all ages can relate to being in love.

5. Artist: Duane Michaels
To convey the mood of this image, the artist turned down the brightness. It was also shot in a creepy room. The artist overlapped layers to get the double image of him standing, and dead. The story being told is that he is a gay male, and that is where aids was the most common back then. Many of his friends had died from it, and he was worried about his own health and safety. The mood evoked in me is nervous and scared. The facial expression he has is upset and scared, and you can feel it. The image looks older, and this was before they had technology to crop and use other things to help them get double images. The angle of the man on the right leaning against the wall also adds to the effect of being scared or frightened by death, and he is really seeing himself on the bed. This is subjective to the viewer because so many people have friends or family that have died from the HIV virus, and they can relate to how he feels.
